Academic research and practical application: PoliTO students visit SINA’s laboratories
22 May 2026SINA’s laboratory in Rivalta Scrivia recently hosted a technical study day for students on two master’s degree courses at the Polytechnic University of Turin. The event gave the future engineers the opportunity to observe the application of cutting-edge technologies in the monitoring and maintenance of major road infrastructure projects.
Students from the courses in ‘Methods and Technologies for Road Infrastructure Maintenance’, taught by Prof. Orazio Baglieri, and ‘Experimental Testing and Measurement Laboratory for Civil Engineering’, led by Prof. Andrea Ciancimino, took part in the initiative.
The day began at the Science and Technology Park (PST) with a seminar dedicated to diagnostic and inspection activities. SINA technicians outlined the company’s operational protocols, focusing in particular on materials diagnostics, geophysics applied to infrastructure, and high-performance surveys. The aim of the meeting was to demonstrate how theoretical university models are translated into technical procedures to ensure the safety of transport networks.
Following the theoretical session, the students were able to observe the analysis and testing processes at close quarters during a guided tour of the laboratories. The activities focused on three specific areas:
- Concrete and Geotechnics: analysis of the mechanical performance of materials and the physical properties of foundation soils.
- Asphalt Mixes: study of material durability and solutions for sustainable road surfacing.
- Geophysics and High Performance: use of non-destructive testing technologies and specially equipped vehicles for real-time infrastructure condition assessment.
The positive feedback from students highlights the need for constant dialogue between the academic and industrial worlds. The meeting with the Polytechnic University of Turin provided an opportunity to share technical knowledge essential for preparing future engineers for the technological complexities of the transport sector.
