European Partner in the ATLANTIS Project for Tunnel Safety
16 July 2025As part of the European ATLANTIS project—aimed at enhancing the resilience and protection capacity of European transport infrastructure exposed to systemic risks caused by natural disasters—SINA and SITAF have joined forces to promote a key initiative. The two companies—an engineering firm and the concessionaire of the A32 Turin–Bardonecchia motorway and the Fréjus Tunnel, both part of the ASTM Group—collaborated in organizing the Open Days held in June in Avigliana (Turin).
Highlights of the days included the 7th Plenary Assembly and the test-site, during which an innovative access control system for motorway tunnels was presented. This system, designed to enhance the safety of operational personnel working within critical infrastructure, enables continuous and precise monitoring of access, ensuring that only authorized personnel, operating under safe conditions, can enter high-risk and complex environments.
The system also facilitates evacuation operations in the event of an emergency s: transmitting devices connected to antennas installed along the tunnel allow Control Centers to monitor in real time the position, number, and type of people and vehicles present along the route. During the test, a monitor displayed the exact location of individuals inside the tunnel, distinguishing between pedestrians and vehicle occupants, and identifying those entering or exiting vehicles. A key feature of the system is to report injuries with a simple push-button, speeding up rescue operations. The test was successful and aroused strong interest from the entire audience, which also included many international representatives.
The collaboration between SITAF and SINA in this project is a concrete example of the strategic value of synergy between a motorway concessionaire and an engineering company—an essential driver for technological innovation and improved infrastructure safety.
